Couple Murdered Over 35 Years Ago In S.C. Still Unidentified

 Jane Doe

Above photos are two sketches showing what both victims looked like.

The female victim a.k.a “Jane Doe”  is described as having medium length brunette hair and blue-green/gray eyes. She was about 5’5” (165 cm) weighing roughly 105 pounds (47 Kg), thin frame and was estimated to be between the ages of 18-20 years.  Jane didn’t have any surgical scar. She is described as being an attractive young woman. She had pierced ears. Her eyelashes were very long. She had two small beauty marks on her left cheek and one on the right side of her face. She also had a mole on her right calf. Her legs were unshaven. She didn’t have elaborate dental work. Her upper and lower right wisdom teeth were missing and she had fillings in all back teeth. Her front teeth probably gave an even appearance when she smiled.

The male victim a.k.a “John Doe”  is described as having brown hair and brown eyes. He was about 6 feet tall (185 cm) and 150 pounds (70 Kg). He was estimated to be in his 20’s. He has a 4” (10 cm) appendectomy scar and two 2” (5 cm) scars on his right shoulder. John Doe had very elaborate and expensive dental work with bridges and crowns. He had an acrylic or porcelain crown on the left front tooth and fillings in most upper teeth. He also had some missing teeth in top and bottom but noticeable in top back left. He was missing his lower wisdom teeth.

The couple was discovered murdered at 6.20 AM on August 9, 1976 on Locklair Road, a rural dirt road between Interstate 95 and S.C. 341 in Sumpter County, South Carolina, USA. The couple had been shot at close range several times: in the back, chest and throat and had been dead for less than 24 hours. They weren’t carrying any identification and their identities remain unidentified more than three decades later.

They had no money on them when their bodies were discovered but they seemed well to do. Their skin was smooth and had olive undertone making them look as possibly from another country than USA which would explain the reason why no-one local has come forward. The pair may have been hitchhiking through the country. It has been speculated that they might be brother and sister. Any money could have been stolen from the unknown killer.

The couple were buried laying besides each other  in August 1977 in Bethel (SC) United Methodist Church cemetery under two bronze plaques reading: “Male Unknown, Aug. 9, 1976” and “Female unknown, Aug. 9, 1976”.

John Doe was wearing a red T-shirt with “Coors America’s Fine Light Beer” written on the front and “Camel Challenger GT Sebring 75” on the back, faded Levi’s blue jeans and didn’t have any underwear on. He wore a Bulova Accutron yellow gold watch, serial number H918803 on his left wrist and a 14 karat gold ring with a gray linde star stone and the initials JPF engraved inside. He also had a box of Grants Truck stop matches in one of his pocket.

When found, Jane Doe was wearing an unbleached muslin blouse, a pink knit halter top that tied in the front, cut-off Levi blue jean shorts and a pair of wedge-heeled sandals with lavender, pink and purple straps. She had no underwear on. She was wearing three silver rings resembling American Indian or Mexican costume jewelry. One had red, white and blue stones, another a feather scroll with rust and green stone an and the third was oblong black stone with three green flecks.

Murdered Monmouth County John Doe Still Unidentified

Murdered Monmouth County John Doe Still Unidentified

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Marlboro Police Department are engaged in a cooperative investigation regarding a murder which was discovered on April 29, 2002.

On April 19, 2002, a Marlboro family discovered a 55 gallon steel drum which had been dumped on their residential property. The steel drum had been originally located in a ravine on the property which contained a small stream. The drum was moved to the end of the driveway by family members. The family believes that the drum was placed on their property no earlier than the night of April 18, 2002.

On April 29, 2002, members of the Marlboro Police Department and the Monmouth County Health Department went to the property to remove the steel drum. The drum was found to be welded shut. Health Department officials utilized a probe to examine the interior of the drum and something solid was discovered. The Major Crimes and Forensics Units of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office immediately became involved. When the drum was opened, the body of a markedly decomposed, fully clothed adult male was discovered. No wallet or other identification was found with the body.

An autopsy performed on April 30, 2002, concluded that the cause of death was multiple sharp force injuries including a stab wound to the heart. The manner of death was determined to be homicide. It is believed that this decedent had been dead for approximately one month.

Numerous clothing items were discovered on the body. They are described as follows:

A short sleeved red, white, blue, and yellow striped golf type shirt with an inner tag reading Chaps Ralph Lauren and a size of XL. The words Chaps and Ralph Lauren are printed randomly all over the shirt.; Carhart utility or carpenter style jeans the size of which is 34×32; A pair of ankle high Chukka style black Timberland boots size 9 ½ wide; Hanes Jockey shorts, size 38; and A belt with a 3 prong belt buckle.

The decedent’s height was 6 feet and his weight is estimated to be between 140 & 150 pounds with a thin build. The decedent’s hips were very narrow and his fingers were long. Eye color was not discernible due to decomposition. Hair color is believed to have been dark brown or black and one quarter to one half inch in greatest length. Composite Sketch shows what the decedent might have looked like alive.

The decedent is believed to be a male of Hispanic/black admixture or white/black admixture. Age is estimated to be between 18 and 34.

A postmortem dental examination was performed. This examination revealed 16 upper and 16 lower adult teeth. The lower teeth are crowded in front. There are two large spaces between various upper teeth but there is no space in the middle. There is evidence of regular dental care.

Police have obtained a fingerprint from the decedent which is suitable for comparison. The fingerprint was launched through state and national fingerprint data bases with no matches found to date.

A Forensic Anthropologist with the New Jersey State Police has examined available evidence in the case. Based upon that examination, a composite sketch of what the decedent may have looked like was prepared.

Investigation has provided police with a basis to believe that the decedent may have been from central or northern New Jersey or one of the five boroughs of New York City.

Anyone with information concerning this matter is urged to call the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit at 732/ 431-7012 or 1 800/ 533-7443 (toll free) or the Marlboro Police Department at 732/ 536-0100
