The disappearance of Tara Calico

tara-calicoTara Calico, then 19, left her Belen, New Mexico home on the afternoon of September 20, 1988 to ride her bicycle on Highway 47. She, nor her bike, were  ever seen again despite numerous searches and media coverage including being featured on Unsolved Mysteries, America’s Most Wanted, Vanished, Current Affair, etc.

Tara’s unsolved disappearance came back into the limelight when, on June 15, 1989, a woman found a picture in a parking lot outside a convenience store in Port St. Joe, Florida. A white van had previously been parked in the spot and the photo featured a teenage girl and an unidentified young boy, both were bound and gagged in the back of a van. It was speculated that the girl in the photo might be Tara Calico and that the boy was possibly Michael Henley, a 9-year old who vanished on a camping trip in NM the previous year. However, Michael’s remains were soon found in the same area he originally went missing.

Two other photographs featuring a gagged girl resembling Tara surfaced over the next few months, though they have never been released to the public.

There are many theories revolving around this case and it seems like the majority believe the young woman was kidnapped however, years after Tara went missing a Valencia County sheriff publicly stated his belief that she was killed the day she disappeared when two local residents accidentally hit her with their truck and disposed of her body, but he had insufficient evidence to make an arrest. But if this theory is true, then what’s the story behind the two kids in the photograph?

Tara Calico was born February 28, 1969 and would be 44 years old today.

Age progressed photos showing what Sabrina may look like as a teenager. Her nickname as a child was Brina.

Dara Llorens is wanted by the FBI who has a felony warrant out for her arrest.

Dara kidnapped Sabrina Llorens-Allen in Austin, TX on April 21, 2002 when she was just 4-years-old. She fled to Mexico and were spotted a year later in June 2003 in Mexico City using the names Blanca Aurora Fabian Uribe and Adriana Fabian Uribe but managed eluded authorities.

Sabrina-Dark-Hair-Missing-ChildIn 2003, witnesses in Mexico, including teachers say little Sabrina’s hair was dark and was dyed so much that her hair was thinning and she was on the verge of going bald. Dara constantly changed Sabrina’s hair style and color to avoid detection, and although she is a natural blonde her color could be any shade, especially now as a teenager. The witnesses told police that Sabrina was thin and had lost weight and was reportedly suffering physically and psychologically. Sadly, she hasn’t been seen since 2003 and would be turning 16 years old this year. By now she may have vague memories of her father, who misses her very much. Many relatives are hoping to reunite with her again someday soon.

The still-shit photo shown to the left shows Sabrina with dark-colored hair. It was taken by a witness in New Mexico prior to Dara finding out that the police were on to her, prompting her to take Sabrina yet again, and flee to an unknown location.

Dara is the biological non-custodial mother of Sabrina. Prior to the abduction she had supervised visitation however, a court then overturned the ruling and she was not allowed unsupervised visitation due to being mentally unstable. She decided to break the law, take a child away from her family and loved ones, and avoid authorities for over one decade.

A message from your daddy: Happy Birthday, punkin. I can’t believe you’re 15. For two years it was just you and I, and you were the center of my world. Now it’s a distant memory. I can only imagine how distant it is for you. But I’m still looking for you, and I’ll never stop. You’re old enough to start asking questions about how you got where you are, and to learn the truth. Please come home. I love you and I miss you.
Feliz cumple, mija.

Family Still Holding Out Hope For Son Who Was Kidnapped 27 Years Ago As A Baby

CHRISTOPHER-ENOCH-ABEYTANCMC600552e1Photo of baby Christopher and an age-progressed photo showing what he may look like today at 27.

Case Type: Endangered Missing
Full Name: Christopher Enoch Abeyta
Birthdate: November 28, 1985
Missing Date: July 15, 1986
Race: White Sex: Male
Age Now: 27
Height: 2’2″ Weight: 17 pounds
Missing City: Colorado Springs
Missing State: Colorado
Country: USA
Hair Color: Blonde Eyes: Blue
Other: Christopher is of Swedish, German and Spanish decent. His hair may have darkened to brown or dirty-blond over the years. His father and siblings are all of average or above average height so he may be as well, now that he’s older.

Christopher Abeyta was 7 months old when he was kidnapped as he slept on the night of July 15, 1986. His parents had put him to bed in his crib which was located in the parents room, and he was taken sometime after midnight and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

The garage door opener was missing and the basement window was open. His parents called police and reported him missing at approximately 6:30AM. When police arrived they couldn’t find any signs of forced entry however, the front door had been left unlocked threw out the night giving anyone the opportunity to sneak in. Like most cases of missing children, family was considered the first suspects. Christopher’s mother and father had separated initially but were working things out and his father had slept at the home on the night of the disappearance. This was the first time since the separation. Investigators haven’t cleared either parent with the case but have no evidence to indicate they are involved.

Quail Lake was drained in the days after Christopher’s disappearance. Nothing was found. Neighbors hadn’t seen anything out of the ordinary and local searchers turned up nothing. In the last 27 years not one trace of the baby boy was found. No clothing, no (confirmed) sightings, nothing.

christopher-abeytaThe parents of Christopher refuse to accept that he is dead and believe someone (who maybe couldn’t bare their own children), abducted their child and raised him as their own. They have created a website, Find Christopher, which is updated regularly and features a “Message to Christopher from his family” on the front page;

We have searched for you for 26 years.
Our lives have forever been changed by this cowardly act done to an innocent baby, and there is no such thing as closure. We have lived with the hope that you were raised with a family whom has loved and cared for you. Your family continues to investigate your disappearance and will not stop until we have answers and justice has been served. You have loving parents and 6 older brothers and sisters who play an active part in your investigation.
We love you!

This pictured of Christopher is posted by the family on their website (mentioned above). Under the photo is a caption which reads ‘The photo is Christopher posing with a Baseball Trophy that his Dad had won for him at a baseball tournament taken a month before he was kidnapped’.

The family is also offering a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the recovery of Christopher Abeyta — They’ve listed some possible locations of where he may be including Texas and New Mexico. It is unclear why they believe he might be in these locations.

Abduction of Anthonette Cayedito

School photo of Anthonette Christine Cayedito who was shot in the Fall of 1985, approximately a half a year prior to her disappearance

Anthonette Cayedito, age 9, was kidnapped from her home in the early morning hours (approx 3.a.m) on April 6, 1986 from Gallup, New Mexico. Her disappearance was profiled on Unsolved Mysteries a few years later. About one year after her abduction a call came in to the Gallup police department. The girl on the phone claimed to be Anthonette, saying that she was in Albuquerque, but before she could say anything else, an unidentified male voice said, “Who said you could use the phone?”, at that point the girl screamed and the call ended. Anthonette’s mother was certain that the voice was her daughter’s, but she still could not be located. Four years later, a Carson City waitress told police that she served a couple and a young girl, and that while she was there the young girl intentionally pushed her fork off the table, and every time the waitress put the fork back on the table, the young girl squeezed her hand. After the three left, the waitress was cleaning the table when she found a napkin that said “Please help me! Call the police,” One month later, detectives interviewed Anthonette’s younger sister, Wendy, and she told them that a man knocked at the door in the middle of the night. She said that when Anthonette went to the door, she asked who the person was, and the man said that it was their Uncle Joe. When Anthonette opened the door, two men grabbed her and took her away. Police interviewed the real Uncle Joe and they ruled him out as a suspect. They believe that Anthonette was abducted by someone who was not a family member, but may have known the family. Penny later went to a medicine woman who told her that Anthonette was alive and that she was being held against her will, and that she may have had a child. Despite this, Anthonette has never been found.

Authorities are not sure if the restaurant sighting was in-fact Anthonette but if it was, that incident was the last reported sighting of the kidnapped child who would be a 36-year-old adult today.

Anthonette’s case was wide-spread, not only because of the crime, but because of the mysterious of the phone call that took place and the waitress sighting. Many people assume she couldn’t possibly still be alive because no further contact or sightings have been reported in the past three decades, but that isn’t always the case. Victim’s of kidnapping who are held against their will for long periods of time can develop what is called Stockholm Syndrome, which is very similar to Battered Person Syndrome.

Robert Epstein, PhD, Director Emeritus a child psychologist at the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies has said that the most crucial psych development period is in childhood, which would make victim’s of child abduction and abuse extra venerable to Stockholm. Take the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard for example.

Jaycee Dugard was 11-years-old when she was kidnapped in 1991 by Phillip and Nancy Garrido as she walked to the bus-stop which was only one street away from her Lake Tahoe, California home. Within a minute of her abduction, she was already tasered, forced against her will into a vehicle with two ”strangers”, that in itself is a traumatizing experience but the next 18 years would change Jaycee’s psych forever.

The first several years, Jaycee was tied up, locked in a sound proof shed in the back of the Garrido’s Antioch, CA home. She was sexually assaulted almost immediately, abused emotionally, mentally, and physically, she was threatened by Garrido, telling her the police won’t believe her if she ever tried running away, and he even threatened her with the one thing she loved and missed the most, her family. This instantly put Jaycee into ”survival mode.”

Several years and two (rape) pregnancies later, Jaycee’s mind-set had completely changed, she has learned to cope and is now under Garrido’s ”spell” and the physical ropes have come off, however, the invisible ropes would stay on for years.

Now, It isn’t all threats and abuse. The ‘good-cop, bad-cop’ strategy is also utilized so that the detainee will confide in them and in Jaycee’s case, it was Nancy who played the ‘good cop,’ pretending to ‘sneak’ out a peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, buying her a kitten and pretending to care about the little girl who she helped kidnapped.

In 2009, a police officer took notice of ”Alyssa” and her two ”sisters”, who were both eleven and fifteen at the time. Realizing something wasn’t quite right the officers dug deeper and ended up having the Garrido’s along with “Alissa” come down to the Police Department. At first, Phillip Garrido was doing all the talking so police separated all of them, but even when Jaycee was alone with a police officer she wouldn’t admit who she really was and kept telling the officers that the Garrido’s were “good people”. Cops used different strategies and eventually “Alissa” opened up and told officers her real name, Jaycee Lee Dugard. She also told them her two little sisters were in fact her daughters, Angel and Starlit.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido were immediately arrested and Jaycee was initially upset but that has since passed and right now, as of 2012, Jaycee and her daughters are on a long road to recovery and have been spending the past few years with her family, especially Tracy Probyn, her mother.

→ In November 2001, Annette Carla Clark was abducted from New Paltz, New York to Cuernavaca, Mexico by her non-custodial mother, Gloria Torres Velez Clark. Her father, Steve Clark, has full custody of Annette and has been searching for her. There is a U.S. federal warrant for the arrest of Gloria Torres Velez Clark.

Annette’s maternal grandmother, Victoria Velez Aranda, lives in Cuernavaca, Mexico and Annette has been seen at her home numerous times. Gloria’s siblings also live in or near the area and the family continues to hide Annette and Gloria.

Gloria Torres Velez and Annette Carla Clark were last seen in the town of Colima, state of Colima, Mexico in October of 2007. Annette was placed in a DIF (Mexican family services) facility and returned to her mother in an extrajudicial (illegal) action before her father could complete pending legal action to have her returned to the United States.

Throughout this ordeal, Mexican agencies and officials have acted with deceit, criminality and malfeasance, violating international law and international agreements such as the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and the UN Convention on the Rig hts of the Child. These agencies and officials have also violated Mexican criminal statutes against the abduction and hiding of a minor. The actions of DIF (Mexican family services) in Cuernavaca and Colima have been particularly reprehensible. Mexican conduct in this case is one small example of a larger problem of a failed state.

If you spot Annette or her mother in Mexico, do not contact Mexican agencies. Please contact the FBI or Citizen Services at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City, or contact us at this site. The abducting family will react with hostility if you approach them about this matter. Annette will likely exhibit traits of extreme parental alienation and Stockholm Syndrome.

International parental kidnapping is a serious form of child abuse. Help reunite Annette with her father, Steve Clark, and other family members who continue to look for her, with the hope she will have a chance to come home to the life that was stolen from her.

Annette’s ears are pierced. She uses the name Carla. She also uses her mother’s maiden name Torres Velez. Annette is light-skinned.

Annette has a fraudulent birth certificate issued by the municipality of Jiutepec in the state of Morelos.
