Mother of missing woman bitter over killer’s release

Yarnell

News Tribune article published July 8, 2013 – A Morgan County man is scheduled to be released today from the Tipton Correctional Center after serving four years of a seven-year sentence for the death of his wife in 2003.

And the mother of the victim is not happy.

Michael Yarnell, 43, accepted a plea agreement in June 2009 on one count of first-degree involuntary manslaughter, if all other charges were dismissed against him.

Yarnell was charged with multiple felonies in 2008 after he allegedly confessed to killing his wife, Michelle “Angie” Yarnell, and leading her family and authorities to believe she ran away with another man.

“The reason he’s getting out now is that he was so successful in hiding her body, which is the evidence,” said Angie’s mother, Marianne Asher-Chapman. “To this day, we have never have found her remains. She is still a missing person.”

Investigators testified that Yarnell admitted shoving his wife, causing her to fall off the couple’s deck at their Ivy Bend home in late September 2003.

After he sat with her for a while, they said Yarnell “freaked out” and loaded Angie’s body in a car with the intent of driving her to Versailles, but eventually took the body to a boat ramp at the Lake of the Ozarks, loaded her into a canoe and eventually “lost” her in the water.

Yarnell then fled the area and wasn’t found by authorities until August 2008.

“I will never understand how our criminal justice system allowed a liar like Michael Yarnell to lead them to such a path, fabricating a story which was nothing more than a self-serving lie to save his own skin from a life sentence or even a death sentence,” Asher-Chapman said.

Asher-Chapman’s experience led her to co-found Missouri Missing, a group dedicated to helping families of missing persons try to find their loved ones by connecting them with various resources, many associated with law enforcement, and keeping missing person cases out in the public.

Despite being able to help many since found the group in 2007, Asher-Chapman still has a hard time dealing with how her daughter’s case has been handled.

“The justice system in the case of my beloved daughter has done little more than to denigrate and insult her and her family and friends, and in no way, has brought any degree of true justice to we who has suffered at the hands of this dangerous predator,” she said.

“It gives him full freedom to continue to harm others.”

SHAINA ASHLEY KIRKPATRICKAge progressed photo showing what Shaina may have looked liked at 7 years old. She will be turning 14 in a few weeks.

Exactly one week ago today marked the 12th anniversary since the disappearance of Shaina Kirkpatrick, then 1, and her newborn baby sister, Shausha.

Kimyala Henson, the mother of both girls, had planned to take them on vacation to Sacramento, California and they were being joined by Henson’s friend, Christina Mayer and a man whom Mayer introduced as her husband, Curtis. They left their Portland home on April 4, 2001 enroute to Sacramento and although they are believed to have made it to California it is unclear if they made it to Sacramento.

It has been confirmed that on April 5, 2001, less than 24 hours after leaving their Portland home Henson and her daughters had travelled to Redding, California and were seen at Shasta’s Lodge with both Mayer and Oehring. This was the last confirmed sighting of the two girls and the last time their mother would be seen alive.

Henson’s murdered remains were located on April 29, 2001 in a Nevada desert but Shaina and Shausha’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Steven Kirkpatrick, the boyfriend of Henson and the father of both Shaina and Shausha had told authorities that both he and Henson had never met Curtis prior to April 2001 and police would soon learn that ‘Curtis’ was in fact Frank Oehring, a fugitive from Missouri who had a warrant out for his arrest at the time due to attempting to murder his ex-wife. According to his former wife Henson had led a group of Satanists and Mayer was a member.

Just over two weeks after both girls disappeared, on April 20, 2001, both Mayer and Oehring were discovered in a vehicle at a rest stop in Collier County, FL. Mayer was dead upon discovery after being shot to death and Oehring was near death suffering from a gun shot wound to the head. He died just days later at the hospital.

It was determined that Oehring was responsible in what police have called a ‘murder/suicide’. He also left behind letters detailing their plan to steal Henson’s birth certificate. Mayer had assumed the murdered woman’s identity in Las Vegas, NV shortly after they met up with her in Oregon. Nothing in the letter indicated they were responsible for the murder of Henson nor the disappearance of her two daughters however, common sense and the circumstantial evidence points to them and police believe they had something to do with it.

They two girls are considered at risk.

Shausha-Latine-Hensonshausha-hensonBoth photos are of Shausha as an infant. The first one is a photo taken at the hospital after her January 2001 birth, and the second photo shows Shausha as a 2 month old, her age when she went missing. Artists were unable to create an age progressed photo due to her age and lack of details.

January 28, 2013 was the seventh anniversary since Angelo, Santino, Selena and Walter went missing.

All four victims were wards of the state at the time due to both parents being unfit with extensive criminal records. Prior to the parents, Ruby Leo and Anthony Marks losing custody of the kids, they would pass them off to one another when the other was serving prison for whatever reason.

In 2007, less than one year after the kidnapping, Ruby Leo was located, arrested and sentenced however, the children’s whereabouts are still unknown and so is the whereabouts of Marks who may have taken them to Kansas City, Missouri, or possibly with other relatives out-of-state.

Marks is also wanted on several other outstanding warrants.

Yuan Wang, Originally From China, Disappeared In 1998 After Getting Off Her Fairfax County School Bus

Yuan-Xia-Wang

The left photo was taken shortly before her disappearance and the right photo is age progressed to nineteen years. She will be turning 27 this year.

  • Full Name: Yuan Xia Wang
  • Nickname: Incha
  • Missing From: Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia
  • Date Of Birth Used: September 13, 1986
  • Age Used: 12 years old (she told authorities she was twelve when arriving in the US however, it is possible that she was as old as fifteen.)
  • Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5’6″ (168 cm); 118 lbs (54 kg).
  • Race:: Asian (Chinese) Gender: Female
  • Hair: Black Eyes: Black/Dark
  • Clothing: Last seen wearing a white t-shirt, blue jacket, jeans and white sneakers
  • Yang spoke Mandarin Chinese and had very limited English skills at the time of her disappearance.

On August 25, 1998, twelve-year-old Yuan Wang was smuggled from China to the United States. They were taking her to Washington D.C. but their plan foiled at Dulles International Airport when one of her smugglers, a Thai citizen named Chaichana Klaharn pretended that she was his niece. Security at Dulles International Airport arrested the smugglers and in September, 1998, they were sentenced to four months in jail for passport fraud.

Meanwhile, Yuan was sent to temporary live at a Fairfax County, VA foster home. She spoke Mandarin and had very limited English so a Mandarin speaking babysitter was sent to care for her. She also started attending Holmes Middle School.

Less than two months later on October 21, 1998 at approximately 3PM, Yuan got off her school bus near Lincolnia Road and Deming Avenue in Alexandria. She was supposed to take a cab to a 3:30PM Doctors appointment but when the cab showed up, Yuan was gone. She hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Searches threw out Fairfax yielded no clues.

A decade after she disappeared, in 2008, investigators said they thought Yuan could be in Kansas City, Missouri, although it’s not confirmed.

Investigators have a few theories including the possibility that her smugglers kidnapped her, forcing her to work (also known as trafficking.). Or she ran away out of fear that she’d be deported back to China. Her foster family stated that although Yuan seemed very smart and appeared content with her new life, they didn’t get to know her well enough to know if she was capable of running away. Investigators are also not ruling out the possibility that she was abducted by a stranger. She is classified as “Endangered Missing”.

Disappearance of Kara Kopetsky Still Unsolved

kara_kopetsky_missing

Photo of Kara Kopetsky which was taken shortly before her disappearance

Kara Kopetsky, born in Frankfurt, Germany on February 17, 1990, moved to Belton, Missouri, USA where she attended Belton High School.

Kara’s mother recalled her daughter’s excitement at going to school on May 4, 2007. It was senior picture day and she had woken up a little earlier that morning so she could put extra effort into her hair and appearance. She left for school that morning wearing one of her favorite outs which consists of a gray t-shirt with a white skull printed on it, dark jeans, a black-studded belt, a grey three-quarter sleeve sweatshirt, black and white checkered tennis shoes topped with her black leather hobo bag.

She arrived at school shortly after 7:30AM and within a half-hour she was called her mother to tell her she had forgotten her school books and asked her if she could bring them to her.

A little later at approximately 10:15AM students reported that Kara had gotten into a verbal argument with a teacher and was seen leaving the school premises at 10:30AM. Strangely, she didn’t inform any friends that she was leaving. It’s almost as if she just had a sudden urge to leave, or possibly was told by an unknown person(s) to meet and but to keep their meeting private.

When she didn’t return home or show up to her part-time afterschool job her parents started to become concerned. Their concerns turned to worry when, after multiple attempts, couldn’t reach her and realized that friends hadn’t seen her since the morning. They filed a missing persons report with Belton Police Department.

At first police didn’t know if she was abducted or if she was another teenage runaway. Family knew she didn’t runaway, nor would she have reason too. — Since Kara had called her mother to bring her books to her school, this gave police the idea that she did not have an intent on running away that day either. They interviews with other students and friends, and conducted multiple searches locally but no sign of the missing teen were ever found and she remains missing.

Kara’s parents had gone into her school locker days after she vanished to look for clues to what might of happened. They found makeup, clothes, money (debit-card), iPod and a new carton of cigarettes. Nothing to indicate where she may have gone.

One person-of-interest was a former boyfriend whom Kara had a relationship with. He was reported to be abusive and controlling towards her. One time, on April 28, 2007, Kara had left work and was abducted by him and while he was driving she had managed to open the door, jump out and escape. He was arrested and the following monday but released. Kara was fearful enough to file a restraining order on him and consequently she vanished the day before her court hearing regarding the restraining order was supposed to start. Did her former boyfriend convince the vulnerable teen to sneak a meeting? Right now the only people who know this answer is Kara and her boyfriend and she’s missing while he’s denying any contact with her.

Kara had a bank account with $150 dollars in it that had stayed untouched, which has become Kara’s former boyfriends alibi.

In February, 2012 reports of an abandoned house being connected to Kara’s disappearance surfaced.

According to Examiner, Russ Ptacek, Investigative Reporter for KSHB Channel 41 and a group of secret “Kara” sleuths have gone to a house and an abandoned building in search for clues on missing Kara Kopetsky. They found what they believe the Belton Police have missed. When Ptacek and the group searched the abandoned building, they found graffiti on the walls. One said “Kara is gone” and another says, “I did it.” They also went to the undisclosed home and in the basement, while the cameras were rolling, you can see cadaver dogs repeatedly sitting down, which is what the animals were trained to do if they smell human remains.

“The dogs were hitting on something, I think it is a possibility that, yes, she could be there,” said Kara’s mom, Rhonda Beckford.

However, when Belton Police were told of the possible discovery, they didn’t approve of the groups help and Kara’s parents have been told by police that they would possibly subpoena them for interfering with the investigation.

“The Belton MO Police Department has had conversations with the Cass County Prosecutor’s office about the possibility of utilizing the grand jury to question otherwise uncooperative potential witnesses,” said Police Chief James Person. “The Belton MO Police Department remains committed to the investigation into the disappearance of Kara Kopetsky.”

This is what the “secret group” has been worried about and told Ptacek they have handled over each piece of evidence to the FBI and Kansas City police, but have not given it to the Belton police as they don’t trust them to solve this case.

The Belton Police did show up at the house and according to Kara’s parents were there for about 40 minutes and never returned.

Kara’s parents don’t believe BPD are trying hard enough and could have put in more effort.

“I don’t believe you can do a thorough search in 40 minutes,” Rhonda Beckford told Ptacek. “Those dogs are hitting on something.”

University of Missouri Student Missing For Almost One Year

Photo of Phoenix Coldon taken the same year of her disappearance

Short description: Missing since 12/18/11 in unincorporated St. Louis, Missouri North County (Spanish Lake area). Her car was found running near the intersection of 9th Street & St. Clair Avenue in East St. Louis, Illinois, keys in the ignition, motor running. She has not been seen or heard from since.

Full story: Phoenix Coldon, then 23, a college student who attended the University of Missouri when she went missing on December 18, 2011 in St. Louis. She was last seen in her vehicle, pulling out of the driveway at her family home around noon. A few hours later, around 3p.m. her 1998 four-door Chevrolet Blazer was found abandoned at the intersection of 9th Street and St. Clair Avenue in East St. Louis, Illinois (Spanish Lake Area) with the engine still running, it was impounded and it took authorities two weeks to connect the car to the young woman’s disappearance.

Phoenix’s parents, Goldia and Lawrence Coldon are devastated and have for the past eleven months they have been desperately seeking any information about their daughter whereabouts. They said the last time they saw their daughter, she was talking on her cell phone, then she backed out of the driveway and drove away, but none of Phoenix’s friends claim they were on the phone with her at that time and the caller on the other end remains unknown.

Phoenix’s case is very similar to the disappearance of Stacey English, 36, who went missing in Atlanta. on December 26, 2011, one week after Phoenix disappeared. Both woman’s vehicles were found abandoned and running less than 20 miles from their home. One of the last people to see Stacey was Robert Kirk, a friend from St. Louis, and although the two were not together, Robert was currently living with Stacey at her condo at the time she went missing, the two had gotten into  a verbal altercation and Stacey kicked him out. He has returned to St. Louis and Police say he has been cooperative and they have not named him or anyone else a suspect in Stacey’s disappearance.
