NC Child, then 9, disappears after leaving her Shelby, NC home in the middle of the night

asha_degree

Left photo is Asha Jaquilla Degree Right photo is age progressed to 19 years. She will be turning 24 this year

There was a thunderstorm happening in Shelby, North Carolina on Valentines Day, 2000 when Asha Degree, then 9, disappeared from her bed at her Shelby, NC home. Harold Degree, Asha’s father, last seen her sleeping in her bed at 2:30am but when they went to wake her up at 6:30am she was not in her bedroom and they contacted police and they, along with Asha’s parents and volunteers, immediately started searching the neighborhood. They noticed her book-bag was missing as well, indicating she left on her own accord. But why would a nine-year old child leave in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm?

Police asked the public if anyone may have seen Asha that night and witnesses came forward and reported seeing her walking along North Carolina Highway 18 right by Shelby at approximately 4am. One motorist told police he was concerned wondering why a little girl was walking along the Highway alone so late and circled by three times and noticed her run off into the woods.

“She walks out of the house and heads down 18 South towards Shelby. Several people say that they see her. But no one stops to make sure she’s OK. She runs off into the woods. And no one has seen her since.” Cleveland County Sheriff’s Det. Pete Hamrick said in an interview ten years after the disappearance.

“She was scared to death of dogs,” Harold Degree said. “I never thought she would go out of the house.”

Her mother, Iquilla Degree, said she believes her daughter packed her school bag and put clothes in it.

“The theory is that some time during the night she gets up,” Hamrick said.

Searches along Highway 18 were conducted that same day and during the search they found a shed within the woods and inside the shed they found Asha’s hair-barrette, along with some empty candy wrappers. Asha however, was never located nor did police find any evidence to indicate what might have happened to her, although they strongly suspect foul-play.

Over one year later Asha’s back-pack was found buried along Highway 18 in Burke County. This deepened Charlotte County Sheriff’s opinion that Asha met with foul-play and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Charlotte became involved.

CCSO and FBI are still hoping that one day they will receive a lead that will finally bring this case to a close.

Missing Maury County Teen Amber Elizabeth Cates

Missing Since 04/11/04 from Maury County, Columbia, Tennessee

Photo of Amber Elizabeth Cates at 16-years-old.

Amber has naturally brown hair but was known to dye her hair lighter at times. According to one of the last people to have seen her alive, she had purchased hair-dye the day of her disappearance.

Amber Cates, then 16, was a teenage girl who grew up in Spring Hill, TN and moved frequently to several States including Georgia and Texas before ending back up in Tennessee where she settled down in a foster home.

According to family and friends, when Amber hit her mid-teens she started rebelling and hanging out with the wrong crowd. She would drink and even occasionally experimenting with drugs, so it wasn’t a surprise that when she went missing in 2004, police considered her just another runaway. However, many who knew the missing teen immediately knew this wasn’t the case.

On April 11, 2004, Amber was seen leaving her mother’s Maury County home with a male friend, James Gordon.  She was supposed to go on a two-day Spring-break trip but when she failed to return a missing persons report was filed with Maury County Sheriff’s Department. Gordon was questioned and he told police that the two of them left her mother’s Tracy Lane home in his car, a gold Mazda. They stopped at a store so Amber could purchase hair-dye and then she met-up with another male friend, Ronald Inzurriaga, who is also known by his street name “California” Inzurriaga.

Authorities tracked down Inzurriaga in an Alabama prison where he was serving time for an unrelated case. He told them he picked up Amber and the two hung out for a short while and during that time the two stopped at a store where Amber purchased hair-dye and he dropped her back off in Columbia with another guy who he didn’t know.

MCSD  were at a dead-end and brought in the Federal Bureau of Investigation to help aid them in this case but despite the added help, this case remains unsolved.

  • Some reports say James Gordon became Amber’s legal guardian several days before she disappeared while other reports say the teen’s sister was her legal guardian.
  • Amber never used her Social Security account number
  • She had a driver’s license, but there’s been no record of any infractions.
  • Some websites list Amber Cates as “Endangered Runaway” but she is considered “Endangered Missing” by both the police, FBI and major missing children websites like NCMEC and Charlie Project.
  • NCMC1110243 Amber’s National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s Case (ID) Number.

Steven_Kraft

STEVEN EARL KRAFT, JR.
February 15, 2001
Benton Township, Michigan

Steven Kraft, Jr., also known as “Steve or Stevie” by friends and family, was an 11-year-old who attended Hull Elementary School in Benton Township, MI. He vanished days after he completed a 5-day suspension for defended himself in a fight with another student. He was described as a good student and this suspension was his first due to a “bully”.

On the evening of February 15, 2001 Steve left his Benton Township home to walk his two dogs. When he didn’t return home for dinner his parents decided to wait a little bit longer before going out to search for him. It didn’t take too long before one of the two dogs came home by himself. He appeared excited and jumpy and led the parents to a nearby pond but when dive-teams searched the pond they didn’t find anything of significance. The other dog was found shortly after at a Blue Creek which is a local creek not to far from the pond.

This case is very similar to the disappearance of Erica Baker, a 9-year-old girl who vanished shortly after leaving her aunt’s Kettering, OH home to walk her dog. The dog eventually came home and seemed distressed. The cases are less than two years apart, both received a good amount of National attention and both remain unsolved.

Many reports came in about possible places to search including a pond behind Harbor Haven Ministries in May 2001 and another search in an area of woods near the Southwestern Michigan Regional Airport in November 2002. but no evidence was located and Steven Kraft’s whereabouts remain unknown.

According to reports, Steve lived on a dead-end street in Benton Harbor (Township) with little traffic, and was familiar with the area. He has relatives living near his home and was well-known to the neighbors. His parents have since moved to Hagar Township, Michigan. He has family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Lexington, Kentucky.

Date of Birth: January 11, 1989 Hair: Sandy Brown
Place of Birth: Milwaukee, Wisconsin Eyes: Green
Height: 5’2″ (at the time of his disappearance)
Weight: 100 pounds (at the time of his disappearance) Sex: Male
Race: Caucasian Nicknames: Steve and Stevie

Steven was last seen wearing a blue-green Charlotte Hornets basketball team jacket, a tan and white t-shirt, tan pants, and black boots.

Mexico Native Recently Added To FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted Fugitives

Fidel-Urbina

Mugshot photo of Fidel Urbina

A former auto-mechanic charged with kidnap, rape and murder  has been on the run for over a decade and recently added to FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives.

In March of 1998 Fidel Urbina allegedly kidnapped a Chicago woman and brought her to an auto repair shop where he beat and raped her. He then forced her into his car, took her to his house and again beat and raped her. She was eventually able to escape and call police who in return, captured and arrested Urbina. A judge released him on bond in October, 1998 and during that time, Urbina abducted Gabriella Torres, a 22-year-old Chicago woman. He again beat and raped the woman only this time, the victim didn’t make it out alive. She was strangled to death by Urbina and he placed her body in the trunk of a vehicle and drove to Gage Park in the 2300 block of West 50th Street, Chicago, IL and lit the car on fire hoping to destroy any trace of evidence. Fidel Urbina fled and hasn’t been seen since.

“These crimes have demonstrated his violent nature and the need to locate and apprehend Urbina before he can strike again,” said Robert Grant, a FBI agent working on this case. “We are hoping that the publicity associated with this case, along with the significant reward being offered, will lead to his arrest.”

Both crimes occurred in Chicago, Illinois and both woman were Chicago locals. He has ties to the area and although FBI suspected he fled back to his home Country of Mexico and could be hiding out in Durango, Chihuahua and Juarez, due to ties. FBI also believe it’s possible he snuck back into the U.S. under a different identity. He also most likely altered his appearance to avoid detection.

Aliases used by Fidel Urbina include Lorenzo Maes, Fernando Ramos and Fidel Urbina Aguirre, Fidel Urbina Aguirre, Lorenzo Fidel, Lorenzo M. Maes, Marcos Antonio and Victor Urbina, “Tonorio”, etc.

According to the FBI, Urbina is the 497th person to be placed on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list since it was established in 1950. He is so dangerous, he replaced former Tennessee fugitive Adam Christopher, a convicted child killer who shot and killed himself in June, 2012 after being confronted by authorities.

Urbina is described as Hispanic male, 6” tall with a medium build and an olive complexion. He weighs roughly 170 pounds. He has black hair and is known to change his hairstyle, brown eyes, and has pockmarks’ and acne on his right cheek. He would have turned 37 last year in 2012.

A reward of $100,000 is being offered for anyone with information that will lead to the capture of Fidel Urbina. Click here to view Urbina’s FBI Poster. — His case has also been featured on America’s Most Wanted. To watch the clip which was last aired on June 15, 2012, click here.

Urbina is considered armed and dangerous and authorities ask you to NOT attempt to confront him, but instead call 9-1-1 immediately.

Case of a Missing Toddler Kidnapped Five Decades Ago In New Jersey Reopened

Age-Progressed-Photo-BillyJones

Left photo shows Billy Jones shortly before he vanished and the right photo is an age-progressed photo of what little Billy might look like as a grown adult

Name: Billy Jones
Hair: Blondish/Brown Eyes: Blue
Height: 3’6″ (at time of disappearance)
Weight: 35 pounds (at time of disappearance)
Race and Gender: Caucasian Male

Date of disappearance: 12/17/62
Location: Vineland, New Jersey

William “Billy” Jones, Jr. was born in Bridgetown, NJ on March 5, 1959. Shortly after, his family moved to 302 Taylor Ave, which was a ‘nice’ neighborhood in Cumberland County, in Vineland.

Like many children, Billy, who was three months shy of his 4th birthday, and his younger sister, Jill Jones, were energetic and enjoyed playing outside. On December 17, 1962, the 3-year-old asked his mother if he could play outside with his sister. It was a snowy day that Winter and the two youngsters were spotted by a neighbor at 11:45am, bundled up in their snowsuits, playing outside the (neighbors) house. The neighbor suggested that the two youngsters go home.

During this time, Billy’s mother was preoccupied. She was feeding her infant and noticed Billy was gone when she heard a knock at the door around 12:45pm and opened the door to find Jill standing alone, carrying a plastic bottle.  Barely two at the time, Jill was unable to communicate fully but managed to tell her mother that “the bogeyman” took Billy. She went outside looking for Billy. He had suddenly vanished and the only known witness was to young to speak full sentences and explain what had occurred.

The police were called immediately and they did door-to-door interviews but no one claimed to have seen the young boy or anything unusual. Police, firefighters, National Guard, and hundreds of volunteers searched locally for days on foot, boat and by air. The tot’s disappearance became national news and many believed a child predator was responsible.

But despite the attention of media, Billy’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Billy reportedly had a dime in his pocket that was given to him by his mother earlier that morning. Both parents have since passed away.

Photo of Jill Jones, now 52, speaking about her brother’s disappearance during an interview

The missing tot is one of the many children who are listed on the FBI website and in 2009, authorities reopened this case, which is one of the oldest unsolved cases of a missing child under 5  in the state of New Jersey.

‘We’re just trying to find out if anyone has any information regarding his whereabouts or if anyone might know who may have been involved in his disappearance,’ FBI Special Agent John Mesisca told FoxNews.com. ‘Back then, he was last seen wearing a snowsuit … What we’re trying to do is get the word out and develop any new leads and resolve the case in any way we can.’

Jill Jones, now a grown woman, still wonders what happened to her brother. The now 52-year-old believes her brother is still alive and believes whoever took him, was trying to replace a lost/deceased child.

‘It’s a gut feeling for me, I know he’s alive,’ she told FoxNews.com. ‘There’s never been a body found, never been anything found. I don’t believe he’s dead.’  She goes on to say, ‘I really believe that,’ she said. ‘I don’t think he was murdered. I really believe someone lost a child and they took Billy to replace him.

Jones has put alot of thought into that Winter day, evening going as far as seeing a hypnotist.

The family had a pet dog at the time, named “Babycakes” and according to Jones, Billy had a special bond with him. Authorities say Billy loved dog’s in general, and would do anything for dogs, so it’s possible that someone with an animal, a dog in particular, could have easily lured the toddler away.

According to the FBI website, Billy was last seen wearing a light blue or grayish snowsuit with a navy collar and silver buttons, a hat that matched his snowsuit and tan high-top crepe-soled shoes with yellow laces. He also has a vaccination scar which is shaped like a giraffe on the back of his left arm between his elbow and shoulder. He would have turned 53 years old this year.

‘I do believe he’s still out there, I just don’t know how to find him,’ said Jones ‘Maybe this is the year.’
