Victor Shoemaker, then 5, and his family travelled to Kirby, West Virgina on May 1, 1996 to visit the little boy’s grandparents.

On the morning of May 1, 1994 at approximately 8:30am, Victor was outside playing with his two cousins, who were a bit older. They were playing in the wooded area in Short Mountain, directly behind his grandfather’s home when he got hungry and told his cousins he was going to walk back to his grandfather’s home to eat. The cousins were distracted and so Victor wandered off.

He hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

West Virginia State Police believe missing boy took a wrong turn and walked deeper into the woods. It didn’t take long to realize he was missing but despite an immediate search, he was never found.

Authorities interviewed the relatives and don’t believe foul-play is involved. Instead, they believe it’s possible the missing boy got lost in the Mountain and quickly died of exposure, rather than hunger and thirst. The terrain in the Mountain is very rough and Victor’s disappearance was followed by five days of rainy weather with temperatures dipping down to below freezing.
